Drinking Kool-Aid With President Obama: The Media Love Continues
Written by K. Evan Buckley on June 17th, 2009
With growing discord rising over President Barack Hussein Obama’s national health care plan, ABC is going to allow the president a 1 hour televised town hall meeting with no dissenting view points of the health care bill. Why do these media elites bother to feign objectivity anymore?
While previous administrations were in power, media outlets had no qualms giving dissenters a platform. In fact, via the power of the media, those critical of the previous administration were given many opportunities to voice their differences. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the main-stream media overlooks, stunts, and mocks opposing views. Some commentators have even implied that these opposers are extremists.
During April’s massive tea party protests across the nation, nearly every MSNBC and CNN commentator ridiculed the attendants or dubbed them as being extreme. Yes, it is very “extreme” to exercise the constitutional right to assemble. And for the media elites who didn’t understand what those tea parties were protesting: we were not protesting President Obama, we were protesting the massive break-neck speed of the expansion of the federal government. We were also protesting the gargantuan amount of debt the government has burdened us with. Both republicans and democrats are at fault, as well as the previous administration.
ABC’s plan to give President Obama free air-time with no opposition shows the media’s willingness to drink the administration’s Kool-Aid. If the plan goes forward, the muting of dissenters is ABC’s way of participating in fascism.
Earlier this year MSNBC host Chris Matthews said on the air, “I want to do everything I can to make this new presidency work.” Why now Chris? Because your guy is in office? Why didn’t you have that objective with the previous presidency? If Chris Matthews had any amount of common sense, he would recognize that a national health care plan on top of our overburdened economy would be disastrous regardless of who is occupying the White House. But as he later said, he wants this president to be successful, meaning that whatever the President says cannot be disputed. No president is perfect Chris. To assume that your guy is never going to do anything wrong disqualifies you from calling yourself a journalists because you will always have blinders and excuses whenever the President does anything questionable.
Being Unbiased
Those who claim to be unbiased aren’t fooling anyone with the facade of objectivity. As adults, we all have our own prisms that we look through. Journalists and commentators are no exception. Fox’s Bill O’Reilly looks through the prism of a conservative and he admits it! Additionally, he does give opposers a voice and will usually give them the last word. On the flip side , MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann is left leaning and mocks opposers while claiming to be an objective journalist. Olbermann has every right to look through the prism of a liberal, but he should at least admit his ideology.
The President Obama national health care infomercial will air primetime, June 24, on ABC. Hopefully the network will spit out the Kool-Aid and let an actual town hall meeting occur.
